With a bit of mucking around it's worth noting that I did get some of the key MPTVClient tool classes to compile under mono.
This allows me to connect to the server; launch a channel and run MPlayer to watch telly under linux; so a cut down client can be done.
If you're interested in some coding.. there's hope.

Although this feature in power cinema is a primitive feature i.e the plugin just take a snapshot of those 12 channels and show those pictures in GUI with an update period of some seconds, it still is very useful feature. Maybe a new challenge for an MP Developer?

I guess the webEPG could work over dial up. Program the modem to dial at 5am or something and then tell the grabber to go to work at that time.
But yeah, as hbryce says, you should also get the TV guide via the digital tv signals.
As for the movie art, you can make your own by adding folder.jpg files to each directory.
