Finally found it. It's a bug in media portal when there are illegal chars in the subfolder names. mp doesn't skip these instead bails out with an error in the log files.
Just for the record if anybody else comes across this.

This seems to happen atleast everytime your watching a Movies/TV-series that you' ve ripped to your harddrive, and sometimes if you've just got MP started.
The movie continues as normal when the server shuts down, but after the movies end...

Thanks, that worked great. Just one other question: After I started using that plugin, every button that is not mapped causes MediaPortal to suddenly quit without warning, which is annoying. Do you know how to fix that?

Update: I tried switching from VMR9 to EVR. In EVR I can actually see the video. When I switch back to VMR9 again, I can see a garbled frame of the video and not just from the MP interface. So it looks like this is a renderer issue, possibly a driver issue (it looks like the frame buffer simply doesn't get updated in VMR9).

i recently updated to 1.1.0 and windows 7, and couldn't make MCE remote work. it was driving me nuts.
resetting the MCE remote did the trick. Now it's working perfectly.

Just uninstalled the latest For The Record plugin due to some wacky behaviour and now I'm left with just 2 lines (Channels)...
Or just disable the remote control's power button in Vista / Windows 7 settings and let MP / TVE3 itself to enter the S3/S4 automatically.
