To reduce the stutter I was getting while using ffdshow post-processing, I had switched the Dscaler colorspace from YUY2 to YV12, which yielded fantastic improvements in XviD's and standard SD recordings and got rid of the stutter.
But that's also when MP stopped deinterlacing the 1080i and 480i...

PS, Splitters do decrease the signal strength. Even amplified ones degrade the signal slightly, they just amplify it first but this can introduce noise.

actually i may have a clue to the problem. In order to maximise quality, i had been capturing at aound 12M/sec with my hauppauge card, hoping to recompress later using software.
