I think by using AMCUpdater, you could have it detect automagically whatever is on a disc. If you tell it NOT to delete "orphaned items" (meaning: entries in the database for which it cannot currently find the file), then it should keep information about files that are on a disc not currently inserted...

Found it! Great, will do the trick.. doesn't look my crappy ASUS MyCinema reports the right signal level/quality, though.. but maybe later I'll get a decent mpeg4 tv card so this will work
