I removed the tray app and - I guess this was the biggest problem - connected the adapter to a USB2.0 instead of 3.0 port (Had not seen this yesterday evening in the dark) ;)

In a nutshell, apparently MP1.6 will not listen to Message Plugin (or EventGhostPlus either, if you use that). The fix is to use a patched MediaPortal.exe.
