This can be set in MP Config: go to the Audio Settings tab of the TV Client and activate "Prefer AC3-Sound"
However, this setting also forces AC3 when better sound is available. For example DVD's will also play as AC3 instead of DTS and you will nedd to activate the latter manually.

The recent versions of LAV video decoder support DXVA, so that's another alternative to FFDShow DXVA.
If you press shift+1 (!) on the keyboard when video is playing it will display the render stats screen - it can't tell you if DXVA is in use, but it does list the codecs in use so you can check if they are what you expect....

I'm pretty sure that your problem is your onboard x4500HD. I Had an onboard ATI HD4250 and was not able to play 1080i60 materials properly. Onboard graphic is only good for progressive materias IMHO.

All mkvs that have subtitles (or marked closed captioned) do not play. All other ones play with no issue.
Screen doesn't change on fail. Can press stop and continue with MP as normal.

It seems to me that no matter output RGB or YCrCb, it will always be converted to RGB first inside the graphics card. The luma expansion and chroma upscale are both carried out when during this stage, and this causes low PQ IMO.
