I got an update to ampdroid last week at some point and when I went to recreate this problem over the weekend it all worked perfectly smoothly :) so I dont know if the update fixed my bug or if something else has changed, but thank you for the help guys :)

Getting WOL by sending the UDP packages over internet can be problematic, I never succeeded. Apparently a lot of sources can swallow the packages on the way, maybe out or your control. If you can use powermodes you should be able to list movies/series/etc. For the remote part you need WifiRemote which it doesn't look as you have installed.

Try using an external player. I've gotten great results with VLC.
