If you want fanless PSU I recommend Seasonic X-560, basically the PSU fan comes on only if the PSU overheats or if the load >50% (280W, which will never happen in most HTPCs), so basically its a fanless PSU at a regular price with the added safety of a fan if required :D

Went for one of the DC to DC 200W supplies and works well. Have decided that the case is just too big though and really want to change to a Server/Client setup as I just want a really tiny silent client by the TV.
I used an old Xbox power supply for the PC and it's just too noisy.

How about shifting much of the storage into a NAS. Then you don't need the main pC on to acces the media, and if you run SABnzbd on the Acer, it can access it as well?

Forgive me as I am a bit out of touch.... So from what I read an APU replaces the need for a graphics card, is that correct? and by what your saying it will handle my needs above?
I forgot to mention that I want to be able to play online content as well.

Hi guys,
Nothing to show, but a little update......
The Seasonic PSU failed on me... but it was swapped out under warranty (one week turn around).
The replacement has a very very quiet hum (only hear it with head against the HTPC).
I'm now running an i7 ivy bridge (was built with an AMD) - so my hope of it being interchangable...

Hi Dave,
Its all in situ and in use...
But the mod to make it fit is quite straight forward (just need a junior hacksaw and nerves)
You you disassemble the MS IR receiver:
Two screws hidden under the rubber feet
Then the unit should come apart
All you need to do is trim a square off the corner:
Unplug the cable...

Hey!
After giving this some thought, I'm thinking of putting together a radio / music player (to replace an old sony CD/ Radio player) using an MSI U100 Wind I found laying around. I'm planning on converting it fully to radio looking device, using an MCE remote and a touch panel. (I'll post some pictures, if I ever get this...

I forgot to add that I also have a 2TB SATA2 WD "Green" drive for recording purposes from the tuner. The SSD is just for the OS and application installs, plus it's less heat and less noise to generate inside the case with two hard drives present.

MMannai,
Thanks. I gave the client a fixed IP adresse and that solved the issue. Remote now Works and the main functionality to search and play music is fantastic. Now I can play music with the TV turner off.
I confirm the lag on the remote.

Technically, there's nothing stopping a client being built for Android that could use a native stream. So, for example, you could run an MP server on one machine, and have a phone / tablet / GoogleTV as a client. I already do this on my phone and tablet using aMPDroid, but I use an encoded stream. This works really well.

About this time last year, I set out to build the cheapest HTPC I could find that could still play 1080p x264 content and came up with (very close to) this:

Another recommendation for HandBrake. You will get better compression (mkv, x264 codec) and more choices, and it will take care of the black borders.
Personally, I use DVD FAB for ripping (one click) and Handbrake for encoding (more or less one click, use AC3 passthru for audio so you don't lose on quality, 400 MB per hour of video...

80 to 140W isn't as bad as I expected, I'd rate you at 2 freezers :-). Currently I use 105 to 140watts for my server but this includes the switch, modem, micro server and a rather inefficient UPS. With regards the UPS I just worked out today via google that a big UPS with a small load will be inefficent. I am looking at getting a...

I used an old $100 PC for 1080p (1.8ghz core 2 clocked up to 2.4ghz) so anything available over the last few months will be fine. Personally I'd go with an intel i3 rather than AMD as I think intel are more stable.

Hi there,
The Sapphire 5670/6670 cards are higher than normal PCI cards and will not fit most cases. The 6570 card is low profile with a heatsink, so that does fit in a normal height slot. But these new 6500/6600 cards are 2 slots...where as the older 5600 cards were one slot.
I'm currently having a change around on my setups. I'm...
