My opinion: it's definitely a good idea to have all your tuners in the server. As you've already identified, this is the best way to avoid double-recordings, re-recordings and having to move media around.

Yes, generally scans should be no big deal. I admit on the odd occasion they have been known to go pear-shaped, but in my experience that's rare so don't let it put you off.

Just to be clear: the safest setup is actually to not use the MPAR for TV.
I reckon' simply configuring your codec settings was probably the trick that solved your problem.
