Found the problem!!!!
My graphics adapter driver (Intel Iris Graphics 540) got an automatic update from Microsoft and it seems that this driver is a crappy one
because I downloaded the latest driver from Intel website, installed it and my Live TV in MP is back on!!! (y)

As for the problem itself, it's now gone away. i.e. The recorded TV videos (those that didn't play yesterday) are now all playing. The only change I made was to re-instal the audio drivers from ASUS (specific to my P8Z77-V PRO motherboard) as my headphones had stopped working. No idea if it's related but both issues...

Well it is now nearly 2 years since I had this problem (don't even remember which version I was using then) and it has never returned since changing that setting.
I'm now on MP 1.18 and it is still OK with mounting .iso so it certainly fixed it for me.:)
